A History of Hybrid Games
Since the discovery of electricity there has been a desire to create games that fuse the tactile and social nature of tabletop games with the wonders of electronics. I call these analog/electronic designs Hybrid games. They differ from electronic games in that they attempt to create a unified play experience between the analog/electronic parts, game mechanics and overall experience. The goal of this research is explore how past and present designers deal with merging the physical and electronic and also perhaps suggest new interfaces, tools, and designs based upon our current technology.
The research is currently represented in two forms:
- An Interactive Timeline: https://www.goldengrave.com/historyofhybridgames/
- An article in the: Parsons Journal for Information Mapping.
This project was made possible by a research residency from The Strong National Museum of Play.
